Livelihood Generation Opportunities for India's Nomadic Tribes - VSSM Initiative
        24-05-2017
“To teach them a lesson, we are prepared to outcaste them!”
The nomads we work for are generally very righteous communities. They abide by the human values we all have grown up with, but somehow choose to unfollow at times!! Sometime back VSSM sanctioned interest free loans to two Devipujak families, for a while they remained regular in paying back the monthly instalments. But as time passed they decided to stop paying their installments. This was quite disturbing for VSSM’s Kanubhai who had recommended these individuals to VSSM management and to us too. Since we always vouch for the integrity of these families, we felt let down by the behavior we had encountered. There was a sense of betrayal we were experiencing.

Zebarben Raval loves to buy gold from her newly formed habit of saving money…..
So, how is business?” I inquired. “Very good, both the boys have really worked hard. They haven’t purchased even a single clothing for themselves. Ben, if you had not helped us when their father suffered a stroke we would have been ruined. The boys had fallen into bad company, but all that is a past now. The loan of Rs. 20,000 you gave has helped us a lot. We used it to set up this kiosk and bay back a small amount that was due on the rickshaw.”

        Housing for India's Nomads
        16-05-2017
50 nomadic tribes will have shelter on their head before this monsoon at Deesa..
Homes for nomadic families in Deesa…. Recently, the Municipal Corporation of Deesa town pledged to allot 300 square feet houses to 50 homeless families scattered around the town, living in shanties and hutments. The catch however, was each family needed to deposit Rs. 60,000. Now the issue here was that these families never have so much money and from where to get that kind of amount to pre-book the houses. The president of the municipal corporation is the very compassionate Shri Pravinbhai Mali, who tried to secure Rs. 45,000 from the Department of Social Welfare for each of these families. The families felt each of them would be able to mobilize Rs. 5,000 but requested VSSM for a loan of Rs. 10,000 each....

Work begins in Vadia for the construction of Sanitation Unit
Vadia and its residents have always been an enigma for the society. For many decades the women of Vadia have practiced prostitution as a means to earn their living and fend their families. While the society held their prejudice and believed that it was a profession these women choose voluntarily, the fact was totally contradictory to it. As a result of such mindset across sections of society no government agencies, voluntary organisations or individuals succeeded with their efforts in Vadia.
